The Acosta-Rua Family Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable organization whose mission is to help the sick and the poor in developing countries. The Foundation identifies and supports well-managed and transparent not-for-profit organizations that provide humanitarian relief and support to the sick and the poor in remote regions of need.

Fundacion Pro-Unidad Cuidado Paliativo Fundacion Pro-Unidad Cuidado Paliativo is a Costa Rican pediatric hospice organization whose mission includes teaching parents how to properly care for their sick children and providing a comfortable environment for dying children and their families. The organization’s goal is not to heal but to control the pain and improve the quality of life of terminally ill children. The organization, with very limited financial resources, cares for more than 700 children throughout Costa Rica.

Four years ago, a dedicated group in Jacksonville was so moved by the work of Fundación Pro Unidad Cuidado Paliativo in Costa Rica thatthey held a fundraiser to raise money and awareness for this incredible organization. The inaugural event held at the Garden Club in Jacksonville, Florida, was attended by more than 400 people and raised nearly $120,000. Subsequently, there have been two more annual events, a second in Jacksonville in 2006 and last year (2007) in San Jose, Costa Rica.

These events were made possible with the continued financial support of the Acosta-Rua Family Foundation and Community Hospice Foundation. Combined, these three events have brought together approximately 1,200 people and have raised more than $300,000 for the pediatric hospice care in Costa Rica.
